If you like to leave the official climbing routes, you should always keep a proper rock hammer handy - a hammer like the Bongo by Petzl. The head is perfect to lever pitons out of the rock. Moreover, you can use the loop on the hammer head to attach the Bongo to your climbing harness with a carabiner. When pulling pitons out of the rock, you can also bind an accessory cord onto your harness in order to take the pitons back with you. There is also a smaller loop on the shaft. If you want to keep the rock hammer from taking a spontaneous trip into the valley, you can bind a thin piece of accessory cord onto the above loop and attach the hammer to your harness. When the head hits the rock, the rubberised handle absorbs the shock and provides firm grip - no matter if you're beating hooks into the wall or setting up a new route!
