Automatic locking with Twist-Lock

The Eagle HMS Twist from Ocun is an HMS carabiner with an extra safety feature: the gate locks automatically as soon as you release it. Unlike a conventional screwgate HMS carabiner, there’s no chance of forgetting to screw it shut — but don’t forget your partner check!

With its two-action locking mechanism, the Eagle HMS Twist doesn’t qualify as a “safe biner”, but a pair clipped in opposite directions makes a handy, quick option for top-rope climbing. It’s particularly useful for belaying from your harness with a device such as a GriGri attached to the belay loop. It’s also well suited to belaying with a tubular device: although the rope runs around the carabiner, it also passes through the device, so the risk of accidental unclipping is very low. For belaying with a traditional Italian hitch (Munter hitch), however, where the rope wraps around the carabiner several times, a different locking system is advisable. Choose one whose locking sleeve needs to be turned more than 360° to open, such as a conventional screwgate, or one that requires several opening movements, such as a three-action lock.

The rounded upper basket of the Eagle HMS Twist is designed especially for smooth belaying with tubular devices. The rope runs evenly without jamming, while the keylock nose prevents annoying gate snags.
